The Children's Institute of Fashion Arts is a New York City non-profit organization devoted to expansive education in the culture and craft of clothing. This means that we are experts in practice and theory, teaching sewing, design, persistence, and creative logic, as well as history, culture, and society. While Britta has been a college professor for the majority of her career, teaching art, society, fashion, and culture, she has hired some of the most talented teaching artist-designers to teach fashion to the CIFA students. We are a team and we are hear to show you the way!
2. Does my child need to know how to sew to sign up? What if they already know the basics?
We welcome all levels. Our classes are small so we can get to know each student.
3. What supplies do I need to participate?
Each course will include a supplies list, which we can either send to you in a bundle, or you can source for yourself! Some courses will require a sewing machine.
4. Can students enroll in a choice of schedules?
At The CIFA, we have a variety of courses and programs that we can’t wait to get rolling! We are starting our Week One program with a set schedule, including Hand Sewing and Styling the Stylist! The following week, we will be offering a second course schedule that includes Machine Sewing and Textiles, but you’ll also have the option to do Hand Sewing and Styling again! Each week we will offer another alternate schedule. So by week Four, we will have four different course combinations to choose from!
5. Do we have to sign up for the whole summer, or can we pick and choose weeks?
We understand that kids can lead busy lives! You only have to sign up for the weeks that your child is available, though we will be offering discounts for sessions purchased together!
6. What does the daily schedule look like?
A typical camp day runs from 9am-5pm, with breaks for snacks and lunch, as well as time to watch the integrated video lessons. On Wednesday we have a late start at 9:45, and have wellness programming through noon. The afternoon on Wednesday is time for project work and office hours. On Friday, we have a late start at 11, and spend the day doing project share and shows as well as participating in a weekly challenge!
7. Are there Scholarships available?
Yes! There will be some full and partial scholarships available for interested students this summer! We are looking for students who are interested in learning more about the creation and culture of fashion, and getting hands on experience trying it for themselves! Applicants must be in age range (8-12). In order to apply, please submit a one page essay letting us know why you want to attend the course, and what sessions you'd be interested in attending. Bonus points for drawings and pictures! Please send those to firstname.lastname@example.org with "Scholarship" in the subject line! We look forward to reviewing your application :)
8. What is your refund policy?
If you can no longer attend the session that you've signed up for, let us know! Our first course of action will be to try to find another camp session that works for you! If that is not a possibility, you can get 50% of your payment back if you withdraw up to a week before the program begins. Once you are within a week of the start of the session, there is no refund possible. In the case of extenuating circumstances or life events, please reach out to us. We are a small team and are happy to review on a case by case basis.
